The legend of the Polish theater and visual arts returns in a VR game developed by a duo of digital artists – Tale of Tales. The development has been carried out as a part of artists’ residence in Tadeusz Kantor House. They were invited by Tadeusz Kantor Foundation and Adam Mickiewicz Institute.

The development of a computer game devoted to Tadeusz Kantor stems from a study visit to Poland paid by Tale of Tales in 2016. Auriea Harvey and Michaël Samyn – the members of the Tale of Tales duo – were fascinated by Kantor’s artwork and decided to treat it as a starting point for creating a VR project that would allow the users to learn about the art of the Polish artist who passed away in 1990.

The game invites the user to enter the world of Kantor’s art and gives them the possibility to interact freely with items and characters found in various performances of the Cricot2 theater. The user may influence the course of actions, thus drawing a parallel to the presence and actions of the director at the stage during the performances. Because there is no preplanned scenario each game is unique. The project also explores the relations between the autonomous actor and a mechanical and controllable mannequin in virtual reality.

 

On July 22 and 23, 2017 all art lovers, tech geeks and connoisseurs are welcome to visit Hucisko and meet the artists. Over that weekend you will have a chance to play games developed by the Tale of Tales collective and savor, before the official release, a preview version of a VR experience inspired by Kantor’s artwork.

We would like to devote our artistic residence in Poland to testing the VR experience, in its development stage, with an audience present. Moreover, our visit will give the Polish experts on Kantor’s artwork a chance to verify our work. We shall start the development a few months prior to our arrival so that our audience may experience a „playable” prototype. Afterwards, this prototype will be developed further based on the results of the confrontation with the audience – said Auriea Harvey and Michaël Samyn.

Following the launch of the game, which is scheduled to take place in 2018, it will be available on Oculus and Vive. Additionally, the application will be showcased at exhibitions and festivals where VR hardware will be provided to the audience to allow it to participate in the experience.
