Maria Stangret-Kantor is an extraordinary artistic individuality. Although her main focus was always entered around painting, it is impossible to pass over her great creations in Cricotage 2 theatre or taking part in Tadeusz Kantor’s happenings.

She met her futures husband, Tadeusz Kantor, in the mid 50s, while studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków. She was a witness to the creation of Cricotage 2 Theatre, and an active member of the avantuarg movement in the socialist era. For over thirty years of marriage, both artists inspired and supported each other.

In her mémoires Maria Stangret-Kantor creates a vivid picture of the artistic and social life of her time.      s and anecdotes from the Cricot turneés.  She unveils both dramatic, and merry, moments of here marriage, relating to the relations between the two artists, as well as difficulties of everyday life in the socialist times. Personal life and artistic development of the couple-artists entwines with the history of the artistic avant-guard of post-war Poland. Through her mindful eyes we see such milestones as reactivation of Grupa Krakowska, or the Foksal Gallery being established.

Maria Stangret-Kantor reflects also on the motifs of her artistic metamorphosis, from the earliest informel pairings, to “continental paysages”  and “hommage” series. She tells about her inspirations, artistic travels, discoveries and meetings.
